BIOGRAPHY

May, 17th, 1965

It's a girl!

Jean Paige Turco is born in Boston, Massachusetts, to Joyce Jean and David Vincent Turco. She's 9 months old when her dad passes away, and her mum moves them to Springfield, Massachussets, to reunite with her grandparents.  She is of French, Italian and Native descent.

As a kid, Paige grows up with a gift for ballet, and she trains to become a professional ballerina. She also plays the flute in her school band, then at the age of 13 becomes a soloist in the Amherst Ballet Theater Company. Following up on her passion, she takes a degree in ballet at the Walnut Hill School of performing arts in Natick, MA, and performs as a soloist in various productions with the New England Dance Conservatory and the Western Massachusetts Ballet Company. But at age 14, an ankle injury shatters her dream of having a career on pointe shoes.

But, once an artist, always an artist, she turns to musical theatre as a dancer/actor, graduating from Bay Path College (now Bay Bath University) in Longmeadow, MA, and majoring in drama with a BFA degree in acting from the University of connecticut.

Young actress Paige then moves to NYC, working in- between auditions in the auditing department of a bank and at "Casual Corner" to support herself. She lives in Brooklyn and works with theatre troupes in Upstate New York.

1987

The Breakthrough Year

“BRIGHT LIGHTS, BIG CITY” starring Michael J. Fox, Kiefer Sutherland, Dianne Wiest and Jason Robards. Paige is cast and filming begins in April, but when the director Joyce Chopra is fired after a month and the script is revised, she quits, refusing to do the newly added nude scenes.

Quote: “My mother said I have to be true to myself, meanwhile, my grandmother said, ‘Honey, do it now, while you can.”

But fear not, the wheels are in motion..

1987-1991

The Soap Opera Years

"GUIDING LIGHT" In July, she becomes Dinah Morgan Marler, a troubled teenager adopted by a wealthy woman on the popular CBS soap opera. For a year and a half, she gets to play the love interest of Ian Ziering and Carl Evans as a series regular. By February 1989. as Turco leaves the show, Paige's character Dinah is turned into a globe trotter by the writers.

Quote: “They let Ian go, and I knew I was next.”

"ALL MY CHILDREN"  One week after leaving 'Guiding Light", she gets the part of Melanie Cortlandt-Rampal, aka "Lanie" who she will play until march 1991.

Quote: “And then a week to the day I got fired from that show (Guiding Light), I got “ALL MY CHILDREN”. It was a Wednesday; I’ll never forget it. Because I was either going to start work or go on unemployment.”

So it didn't matter after all that she didn't get a part in the other ABC soap "Loving" for which she auditonned as well!

1990 - Moving on...the Big Screen

In October 1990 still in "All My Children", she is cast as April O’Neil. In november, she starts shooting the sequel to the hit movie, “TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES”, in NYC. She manages to work both schedules, shooting scenes for the movie as well as appearing as Melanie in the soap.

Quote: “I remember on the 1st day in rehearsal, I felt like I was 5 years ols in Disneyworld. I grew to love these Turtles, they are my buddies"”

The role of April O’Neil, an intrepid television reporter who supports the heroes on the half shell in their pursuit of villains in “TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II: THE SECRET OF THE OOZE” (1991) marks Paige’s big-screen debut. The role of April was originally performed by Judith Hoag, and critics note that Paige's portrayal is much closer and truer to the character as seen in the original Miragecomic book.

Quote: “This April is my April, the way I perceived her. I tried to bring a certain amount of reality to her. She also has to have some quirkiness to be able to accept the absurd...”

47.jpg

“TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES II: THE SECRET OF THE OOZE” is released in theatres on March 22, 1991 in the United States, and subsequently in numerous countries from June through to August.  It opens at number one in North America on its first weekend of release, will win 3 awards, and is a huge success at the box office.

Meanwhile, Paige signs for 3 different TV commercials, (Reebok, Special K and Lactaid)

1992-1993

Turtles' Friend

Thanks to the huge popular and financial success of "Tmnt2", Paige is called to resume her role as April O'Neil in the 3rd chapter of the Turtles saga, so it is time to say goodbye and thank you to the soap opera days...

“TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES III”, is released on March 19, 1993 in the United States. At the time the film is produced, Golden Harvest thinks the franchise has reached the end of its movie career. The project goes forward with low expectations, little fanfare, and a modest $17 million budget. and yet goes straight to No.1 at the box office; making twice its production budget.

Quote: “It’s a great thing to be the human kids identify with and can live through to relate with the Turtles.”

“I want to do my next film with humans. (smiles).”

“VIBRATIONS”, released on July 2, 1996, is another straight to video project. It stars James Marshall and Christina Applegate, with Paige playing Marshall’s girlfriend, Lisa. Vibrations gains a loyal underground following amongst the electronic music afficionados. Funny fact: Each take of the scene where TJ is panhandling brought a profit of approximately $5 from pedestrians who wandered by, unaware that a film was being shot.

“NYPD BLUE” She auditions for a part she doesn’t get, however co-creator David Milch is so impressed, he assures her he will write a role just for her. And he does. Abby Sullivan is born.

Quote: “Part of me went, ‘I’ll never hear from him again.’ When I did, I thought, ‘Finally, somebody said something and meant it.”

Quote: “It was very important for me to play her as a woman who had the same problems that we all have within our lives – and [lesbianism] just happens to be her sexual preference.”

“PARTY OF FIVE" Her role in "NYPD BLUE" may not have been major, yet it brings Paige more recognition and exposure. She gets cast as Annie Mott, an alcoholic, single mother  in " Party of Five" from October 15, 1997 to May 13, 1998, and successfully draws even more attention on her, along with  Jennifer Love Hewitt and Neve Campbell during her 18 episodes stay.

Quote: She has the ability to feel like she's got her life completely under control; and yet she also does a good job of  playing somebody whose life is falling apart. She has amazing range. C. Keyser

Paige works on both “NYPD BLUE” and “PARTY OF FIVE” at the same time, and the role of Annie doesn’t leave much time for her to return as Abby on NYPD. She eventually does though, so that Abby can deliver her baby.

Quote: When it rains, it pours. I've worked really hard for years. Now I just happen to be on things that people know.

“DARK TIDES" In 1998, Paige is powerful and desperate as Sara, an unhappily married woman, who plans to kill her abusive husband, with the help of her lover and husband's brother, in the straight-to-video movie. She plays opposite John Mese, her fiancé at the time, who she met while working on "American Gothic" in 1994, John Newton and Beth Dixon.

“CLAIRE MAKES IT BIG”, In 1999, she appears as funny Bronwyn, a supporting role in Jeremy Workman’s award-winning short comedy. It follows the travails of a talented actress and her difficulties landing a decent movie role. A sharply written and briskly directed satire of the acting and filmmaking professions that then turns into a hilarious wish-fulfillment fantasy, it also features a lovely lead performance by Mara Hobel .

"THE AUTHOR'S VOICE" (Theatre). In May 1999, Paige stars with Philip Seymour-Hoffman and Christopher Orr in a play written by Richard Greenberg. Directed by Evan Yonoulis , the play is a kafkaesque one-act dark comedy about a handsome wanna-be-famous author who has a secret locked in his apartment: an hideous gnome who is the actual artist and writer to the much- expected novel.
